Grounded

This project uses experimental photography to explore our relationship with the natural world, investigating how the world around us informs the world within us and vice versa.  The outcomes are somewhere between sculpture and photography; staging and styling still life arrangements that last only long enough to be documented through photography. Like the vanitas paintings pioneered by the Dutch School, still life can still be a reminder of our ‘humanness’ our fragility and our connectedness to the rest of the natural world. By exploring the physical, sensual world in a time when the virtual world is in the ascendance this project is interested in the effects of tactile experiences in our everyday life. The subjects are all grown and nurtured by the artist from an allotment, garden or window sill, then photographed in an improvised daylight studio constructed inside a domestic dwelling.
